In the Middle Ages, people continued to use knives and small scissors, which required skill and precision to avoid nasty injuries. Unlike our carefully designed nail clippers, they were extremely risky to use.

The first modern-style nail clippers began to appear in the late 19th century. In 1875, Valentine Fogerty patented a nail clipper design in the United States (Patent No. 170,420). This design was a significant step towards the nail clippers we use today.
In the early 20th century, designs slowly improved and became more user-friendly and efficient. In 1881, Eugene Heim and Celestin Matz patented another nail clipper design (Patent No. 238,089), which introduced the lever-operated mechanism.
By this time, nail clippers began to be mass-produced, becoming more widely available and affordable. Companies like H. C. Cook Company and the Sure-Clip Company helped popularise these tools.
At this point the design of nail clippers became more standardised. The common “lever-type” nail clipper, with a pivoted lever that forces two blades together, became the most popular form. These continue to be best sellers even though they often cause a host of problems.
Issues with lever-type clippers include misalignment.
This is where the edges are not properly aligned, causing uneven cuts or the clippers not to cut at all. Exposure to moisture can cause the metal parts to rust, which affects the functionality and hygiene of the clippers.
